With gloves, a respirator and goggles, Reynaldo Noyola, 40, a field supervisor for Clarity Water Technologies, suits up to clean another building’s cooling tower.

Once fairly routine, the job he has mastered over 15 years has become almost a matter of life and death, as Legionella bacteria spread in various South Bronx cooling towers this summer, killing 16 residents.

As New York City battles another deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, facilities with cooling towers across the city are ramping up cleaning and maintenance efforts. NBC News Reporter Natalie Pasquarella asks Greg Frazier of Clarity Water Technologies the tough question: “Why is legionella coming back after a cleaning and disinfection is performed?” Frazier says there are a few reasons Legionella can stay in cooling towers after a cleaning. While it’s true that the cleaning crew could have missed some hard-to-reach spots, it’s the ongoing maintenance that is crucial to success in the weeks following a cleaning.
